Bill Andrews (October 11) “proposes”, note the word, that drivers over 70 should pass a test each year to retain their driving licence. The utter cheek of the man!

There is much to criticise about driving, manners, road sense, going round blind corners without stopping and at speed on the wrong side, lack of road sense and observance of regulations in general but to pick on the over 70s to cure traffic problems is, putting it mildly, hare-brained. I will refrain from saying more about his total disregard for older people’s feeling. No thanks for his advice.

What can improve road traffic in general are motorcycle police officers, well-trained to nab drivers over-speeding, have noisy exhausts, do dangerous driving manoeuvres, take blind corners at speed without stopping, use mobile phones, drink-drive etc.

Much can be achieved by traffic cops in and outside built-up areas.
