The White House is becoming the "Pink House" in recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

President Barack Obama announced via the Twitter social network that the building would be bathed in pink light for just one night.

The American Cancer Society says there are about 40,000 breast cancer deaths each year in the US.

Mr Obama signed a proclamation at the beginning of the month designating October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last October the Obamas hung a large pink ribbon on the White House.
