Animal Welfare Department to sue 'aggressive' dog owner
Animal welfare officers this morning rescued six puppies and three kittens from a site at Mtarfa and ordered the owner to improve conditions for his remaining 15 dogs and bitches after a raid this morning.
Animal Welfare Officer Godric Marsden said the owner had reacted aggressively to the animal welfare officers on the site and the police had to be called in. When the man was told that the dogs should be neutered, he replied that he killed the puppies.
The department is to sue the man on the basis of his behaviour to the department's officials and his claim.
Mr Marsden said that the dogs lived in poor conditions, using old metal tanks as their kennels.

"I was thinking of also tying up the 'aggressor' to a chain during the rain and sunshine and leaving him a barrel for shelter"
Do you expect to educate people how to care for animals by treating humans as you are suggesting?

great job to the animal welfare! I disagree with suing the man, unless of course it means Animal Welfare getting money to finance their continued good work. I was thinking of also tying up the 'aggressor' to a chain during the rain and sunshine and leaving him a barrel for shelter........ON a tangent issue, can animal welfare help in solving the problem of cats and dogs being killed by cars and left on the street. I have at times put them to the side of the road and at others i have even picked them and buried them. Can't there be a person hired by the sanitation dept to go around and pick them and give them a decent burial or cremate them? sometimes these animals are left for days in blazing sun

There are 99% animal loving people on the island and 99% who keep their dogs on rooftops, come rain and shine. Whitewashed sepulchers no doubt about it.

The country and it's people are judged by the way they treat their animals and the way they drive........Enough said.

This man has no business keeping any animal let alone 15 dogs! Perhaps, he should be made to live in an old metal tank himself for some time.

Isn't there a legal requirement for the registration and quality standards compliance of breeders, commercial or otherwise, of domestic pets and exotic animals irrespective of specie?
Goats, cows, pigs and other similar beasts for human consumption have to be registered and their quarters are subject to regular vetinerary inspection.
If there isn't such a scheme why can't a parallel scheme operate for breeders of domestic animals. I learn't only this morning that a mixed breed husky type dog would cost €uro300 plus and others have said a dachshund pedigree dog breeder in Malta is asking €uro3,000. This is not insignificant money and a genuine breeder would afford the cost of registration.

Well done goes again to Animal Welfare and especially to Godric. Im so relieved that finally we have an animal welfare department. I know that nothing will be done from behalf of court but at least people are being warned & hopefully some sense will be knocked in their minds. I try not to think of how many animals are suffering on such a small tiny island. I wonder how we can call ourselves catholics!! For the person who said that there are 99% animal lovers, I sooooo totally disagree. If it was the case, the animal welfare department wouldnt be on the go all the time and with so many saved animals on daily basis.
Well done again and I truly appreciate all your work. I hope these puppies and kittens which were saved by the animal welfare will find a better life in better hands

I agree with you, penalties should be much harsher! We cant show compassion to humans who are so cruel on these gentle animals...

We need proper education to stop similar abuse to animals.
Certainly not the type recently advertised where a female personality shed all clothing, smeared herself with blood and was photographed in a cage. Apparently this was done to raise awareness about canine abuse. Thank God it was in no way related to pussy cats as the photos might have been a bit more suggestive!!!

MMB,
got the gist of your argument.
However, (tkellem ghalik) I have no problem whatsoever with having more female personalities (mind you not exactly all!) similarly shedding their clothes. As to her she'd rather go naked, in true gentleman's fashion, I am more than willing to offer her a fur coat!

WHAT!......This is unacceptable!.......I hope our judicial system has what it takes to sanction a person like that who has admitted to animal cruelty challenging the animal welfare out rightly, otherwise it would be sending the wrong signal that these actions are tolerable. It’s about time that these cowboys get eradicated from our community; there should not be complacency in a civilised society for these people. We’ve had them for too long.

Good on you Animal Welfare Officers,
you have the full support of all the animal loving
people in Malta that is 99% of the population!

I don't like animals at all...but I firmly believe if one can't afford animals for whatever reason, s/he shouldn't ask for it.
With the same argument, one shouldn't bring up animals if s/he can't cope with them.
I'm pretty sure that non-animal-loving people (that 1% of the population if true) still doesn't approve of cruelty.

Why should he have more than one dog under his roof? This should be illegal especially when he doesn't give a hoot to laws and order. He is a menace to his neighbours and a hoodlum to other respectable people. He should be taken to court for even contemplating destroying puppies, let alone doing it..

I don't think the Malta courts will do anything, even for violent individuals it is usually a tiny fine and a suspended sentence - this allows these troublemakers to carry on as before.
I despair of deterrent sentencing (even for well know violent criminals, with several offences) here in Malta - it's a pathetic travesty the way 'justice' and the courts let down the public time after time. It seems that the courts want to show their compassion for the criminals instead of compassion for the victims - a mickey mouse system indeed.

maaaaaaa what a stupid mentality...'kill the puppies'....u really have no heart if you can get yourself to do such an act. the human way to go about it is to neuter pets around the island so unwanted offspring are not left in the streets striving for survival because of human stupidity!!
