The first 2010 Nestlé Fitness Outstanding Woman master class kicked off at the InterContinental Malta with a focus on nutrition and healthy eating.

Fitness and nutritional consultant Claire Spiteri led the session with a talk about how the three finalists – homeopath and mother of seven Bernardette Degaetano, restaurant manager and mother of two Melanie Xerri de Caro and company director and mother of two Antoinette Doneo - could create healthy yet delicious recipes for the whole family without taking up too much time.

Ms Spiteri explained that healthy eating was not just about the actual ingredients used and that it was just as important to be vigilant when it came to portion control.

It helped to eat smaller amounts of food but at frequent intervals during the day. The method of cooking was just as important, with baking, grilling and steaming being acceptable and frying to be avoided as much as possible.

All three finalists tried their hands at preparing a Greek chicken pitta, a chicken tomato wrap sandwich and a lettuce tuna wrap. The end results were tried and tested by the panel of judges, who included InterContinental Malta’s food & beverage director Angelo Zuccala.

The ladies pronounced each recipe to be an excellent idea that would probably be welcomed by their families.
