Darren Vella and Clive Farrugia failed to maintain the high standards reached in Skeet pairs the day before during the singles shoot at the Dr K. Singh range in New Delhi yesterday.
On Monday, the Malta duo produced an inspired display to finish fourth from 12 teams. However, in singles both struggled to keep abreast with the top shooters in the first three rounds after Day One of the competition.
Vella had scores of 24, 19 and 24 to finish 18th from 29 entries on 67 clays. Farrugia targeted 62 from 75 after scores of 21, 19 and 22.
Andreas Chasikos, of Cyprus, upstaged Georgios Achilleos to temporarily top the classification with a perfect score of 75, one better off than his compatriot.
Today, all shooters will be involved in the last two rounds of 25 clays each with the top six proceeding to the final.
Meanwhile, Malta’s involvement in lawn bowls ended yesterday when Carmela Spiteri and Shaun Parnis bowed out of the singles events.
Spiteri lost her remaining two matches from Pool B to finish 10th, one place off bottom, with six points.
The Australia-based Spiteri was beaten by Guernsey’s Ali Merrien2-0 (4-16, 4-7) and then by New Zealand’s Val Smith 2-0 (2-11, 5-8).
Parnis started the day by beating Rob Weale (Wales) 5-0 on a tiebreak after a 1-1 (10-7, 5-6) draw. He then needed another tiebreak to have the better of Leslie Lagatulle (Niue Islands) 5-9, 12-2 and 5-1.
However, in his last match in the group, against Brunei’s Ampuam Kassim, Parnis lost 0-5-1.5 (6-6, 7-8) to finish seventh from nine bowlers with six points.
