The Chamber of Advocates has objected to the threat by the Judicial Vicar to members of the judiciary who presided over divorce cases.
In a statement, it referred to the homily given by Mgr Arthur Said Pullicino at the opening of the Forensic Year.
Mgr Pullicino threatened with grave sin those who presided over divorce cases.
The chamber said that while it confirmed its belief in freedom of expression and belief and in the Church’s duty to spread its word, it had to object as to how religious considerations were being included in purely secular matters.
“The homily was insensitive not just because of the occasion during which it was made but also because it attempted to impose a duty on the judiciary and lawyers not to follow the country’s law, an imposition that could only be considered anti-Constitutional,” it said.
