The Emigrants’ Commission and Friends of Australia will be taking part in a Mass at St John’s CoCathedral on Sunday at 9.15 a.m. to mark the canonisation of the first Australian saint, Blessed Mary MacKillop, to take place in St Peter’s Square in Rome on the same day.
Australian High Commissioner Anne Quinane said that the recognition of Australia’s first Catholic saint was a landmark event in Australian history and the canonisation recognised the contribution she made to the betterment of Australian society during her lifetime.
Blessed Mary MacKillop was the daughter of two Scottish immigrants in the 19th century and founded the Order of the Sisters of St Joseph.
President of the Friends of Australia Association Tony Cutajar said the canonisation was a way of renewing ties between Malta and Australia.
