The Gozo ferries saw an increase in trips, cars and passengers over the summer, the NSO said today.

It said that during the third quarter, commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 8.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2009 to reach 1,351,298.

The number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 3.9 per cent, totalling 344,457.

August saw the highest number of commuters - 500,237 - or 37.0 per cent of the total for this quarter.

The number of trips in the third quarter this year stood at 5,814, an increase of 2.9 per cent over the corresponding period last year. Most trips took place in August - 2,066 - or 35.5 per cent of total trips for the period under review, the NSO said.
