A total of 6,617 second hand vehicles were imported and registered in Malta between January and August, Austin Gatt, the minister responsible for transport, has told parliament.

Government revenue from registration and licensing amounted to €25,590,604 and €31,850,342 respectively.

According to NSO figures issued earlier this year, the stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 536 in the fourth quarter of 2009, to stand at 300,347.

Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 1,474, or 34.0 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed 'used' motor vehicles came up to 2,860, or 66.0 per cent of the total.
