Recovering drug addict given another chance
Simon Borg, 25 was this afternoon condemned to a one year jail term suspended for three years after he admitted to stealing from four cars between last Saturday and Sunday in Gzira.
Defence lawyer Joe Brincat that his his client has serious drug and financial problems. He lives with his girlfriend and two children and is dependant on her salary.
The prosecution confirmed the circumstances mentioned by the defence but said the crimes which had been committed could not be ignored.
Sources said that Mr Borg's financial problems are such that the electricity supply to his flat has been cut off.
Mr Borg had followed a drug rehabilitation programme in Scotland and was drug-free for two years but then started abusing drugs once more. He went back to Scotland, but was not accepted back in the drug programme.
Magistrate Anthony Vella after taking into consideration the circumstances of the accused, imposed a one-year jail term suspended for three years.
Mr Borg told the court that he was ready to pay for the damages he had caused - including the car doors which he had forced open - as soon as he lands a job. He is currently again attempting to kick his drug habit and is being given methadone.

This guy, is very lucky, to be given a second chance, and I appreciate the fact that the magistrate, took in consideration the whole scenario. However, what about if the ppl here robbed, are also facing the same financial burdens, as he is.....they have to wait for him to find or rather be fit for working?? Not too fair, on them I think!

I am going to write a short comment, as the case has been decided and there is no appeal.
But your comment is a case in point about what I usually write, that people reach conclusions from the reports, which may not be complete. Not your fault really !
In the judgment, the Magistrate ordered SB to pay 1115.63 euro in damages to all the victims and this within six months, apart from the restitution of all the things to their lawful owners.

May Mr. Simon Borg take this opportunity very seriously and succeed in the struggle against his drug addiction. His girlfreind and two children can shed a nice sparkling light onto his own life and he should enjoy that to the fullest and stay away from drugs and the trouble that brings.
Take care and I wish you the best for your future, you are ever so young, at 25. Don't waste your life.

Very nice words, but little do they work with this type of people. I don't empathise with them as I know that many times they end up in that miserable situation because they were lazy and thought they could rule the world without putting in any effort or sacrifice when they were younger. Life is hard for everyone, and many people do their utmost and struggle to make it bearable. But then don't come to seek my compassion and mercy if you were careless and jobless all your life, and you come to me and steal my stuff, which I bought with my hard-earned money. Who are you?
