Andrew Cassar, a former employee of San Antonio Hotel, has been ordered to pay €7,845.77 after he was convicted of having hacked the hotel's computer system.

The court established that the incident happened after Mr Cassar learnt that he was to be dismissed. He was employed on probation as IT administrator and junior accounts clerk in 2008.

Mr Cassar pleaded guilty and apologised for the incident.

The court rejected the hotel's claim for €20,442 - the cost of a new computer server. It had pleaded that it was not viable to repair the old system, but the court established that the old system already needed replacement before the incident.

The compensation was worked out on the basis of the interest on the value of the server had it been replaced in three years' time.
