I am writing to express my disappointment at the total neglect of the upkeep of the Marsascala playgrounds.
It seems the local council has completely abandoned them as they are in dire need of a good clean-up. The floors are filthy, stained with all sorts of liquids and chewing gum, and littered with cigarette butts.
These playgrounds are extremely unhygienic and unsafe for children to play in. In the past, bowsers used to be brought in once in a while to wash these playgrounds; clearly this is no longer being done.
The safety and state of the swings and other equipment leaves much to be desired: they are old and worn out and desperately need fixing or changing altogether.
They also have to be brought up to EU safety standards.
I know these are among the most frequented playgrounds in the south of Malta but this is all the more reason why the upkeep should be more frequent. In fact the playgrounds generate good business for the bars, coffee shops and restaurants in the area, so should they not contribute towards its upkeep?
After all, they do occupy most of them with their tables and chairs.
I appeal to the mayor of Marsascala to make the upkeep of the playgrounds his number one priority in the allocation of funds and to upgrade it to EU standards just like the council of Munxar did very recently.
