Malta started their commitments in the UEFA U-19 Group Nine qualifying tournament with a 4-0 upset to Slovakia, in Slovenia, yesterday.

The Maltese team held sway for most of the first half but conceded two quick goals just before half-time and they never really recovered after that.

Zac Muscat’s free-kick was stopped by the keeper midway through the first half and Matthew Paris had an open chance on 35 minutes but headed wide from a good position.

On 43 minutes, Michal Kamerick opened the score after a fast break and in time added on Tomas Miknic made it 2-0 following a similar move that had led to Slovakia’s opener.

The Maltese were demoralised and Slovakia added two more goals through Michal Skvarea and Vrabler Hartin late in the match.

Malta’s next match will be against The Netherlands tomorrow. The other team in the tournament are hosts Slovenia.

Malta: J.M. Vella, D. Sammut (67 D. Sammut), K. Fedele, S. Borg, S. Pisani (71 C. Vassallo), J.P. Farrugia, Z. Muscat (Q. Bregman), B. Kristensen, J. Paris, M. Tabone, C. Borg.
