Hawkers, tattooist, booked by health inspectors
Health inspectors last month booked a festa hawker for exposing food to risk of contamination, keeping of food in unsuitable temperature conditions and structural deficiencies.
An illegal catering establishment was booked for lacking amenities to operate a food business; two hawkers were booked for not providing necessary hand washing facilities while a confectionery was similarly booked for selling unpackaged meat products thus exposing a risk of contamination to other food.
Another outlet was found to have removed sealing of food products without authorisation.
The Health Inspectorate said a tattooist was also found operating illegally from his own residence and a person was caught smoking inside a non-smoking area at Mater Dei Hospital.
The department issued; one for illegal manufacture of food from own residence and sale of same for further retail, one for keeping an illegal catering establishment without necessary amenities to operate a food business and one for selling unpackaged meat products and hence causing a risk of contamination to other food.
The department said that 478 improvement notices were to food business operators following an unannounced inspection by Environmental Health.
Eleven agreements were reached operators who were required to improve their premises or their food safety management systems.

And what about those vendors selling bread at the Valletta entrance near the bus terminus. You might think, why are you complaining, when their bread is covered. Yes , you are right in saying that, but have you seen the pigeons all over their wooden cart, when not in use, and then the owners comes along and display his foods on it. Do you get my drift.

I agree and go beyond that in saying that everything which is imprted should have ingredients, nutritions etc translated to Maltese or at least English. This is not just Lidl, but also various Italian brands. Official languages are Maltese and English and everything should be translated.
Sometimes, I just cant understand how the authorities issue licenses without any impositions whatsoever.

According to the maltese laws the Italian language is allowed as well as English or Maltese on labelling.

Because it's labelled in Italian, which is perfectly legal in Malta

Why is any store/supermarket in Malta/Gozo allowed to sell products without Maltese or English,(the universal language), labelling. A country whose official languages are Maltese and English. Italian a third. Considering the amount of tourists visiting Malta and Gozo and staying long enough to have to shop for food and other necessaries on a daily basis, this is bad communication. Also bad buisiness. I know, I know. I am aware that this is legal in Malta. But it does not make it right. Besides, this very law was originally meant to be a temporary one, and provided there were no complaints. WELL? THERE ARE COMPLAINTS NOW. HAS BEEN FOR SOME TIME! Mr. de Marco. can you help?

@MCachia......what are you talking about???Italian is not an oficial language here!!
M.cachia

Pray where have I said Italian is an official language?? It just happens that labelling in Italian (which I am personally against if you must know) is currently legal. Therefore we can complain about it, but Supermarkets have no obligation to pay any notice.
Re: labelling not in Maltese, English or Italian - I haven't seen any - but if any exist, they are illegal.

Nice to see this kind of report.
Can I ask why we do not get these kinds of reports from the Environment Inspectorate within MEPA? So many facilities, so many waste carriers and yet not a word on what is going on to enforce environmental law or improve our environment
