Marsa CC had a busy schedule last weekend.

On Saturday, the team was involved in a triangular one-day tournament that also involved newcomers Elmdon and Washing­ton, the latter playing here for the fourth time. On Sunday, the locals played a 40-over game against Washington.

The tournament was played on a 20-over format.

Marsa played Elmdon first. The tourists won the toss and elected to bowl. Malcolm Crabbe opened the batting and hit 59 runs. Derek Ali was 33 not out and Tim Wheeler was the only other batsman to make it into double figures with 15 runs. The home side totalled 131 runs from their allotted overs.

In reply, Elmdon were bowled out for 84 runs. Adam Mellick top-scored with 14 runs while D. Turner and B. Campbell each had 13.

For Marsa, Sarfraz Ali was the main wicket-taker with four.

The second game, between the visiting teams, ended in a tie of 132 runs each.

Washington batted first against Marsa in the decisive match.

Ashley Cruickshank hit 41 runs and Aff Nasseen 25, Glenn Matthews 22 and Shawn Hill 19 for a total of 123 runs.

Mike Caruana was the main wicket-taker with two.

In reply, the hosts made the runs required with four balls to spare.

Javed Shah had the best score – 44 runs. Anthony Roberts and Justin Brooke, who saw the home side to victory, both made 20.

Marsa won the game and the mini-tournament.

In Sunday’s 40-over match, Frank Spiteri opened the batting for Marsa and returned from the crease with the side’s best score of 64 runs. Ronnie Sacco was not far from that tally as he added 63 while Sarfraz Ali chipped in with 26 and Bikram Arora 24 for a total of 229.

Ian Relf felled three wickets for the visitors who launched an inspired reply that, however, fell short of target by 30 runs.

The chase was led by captain Shawn Hill, 60 runs, Lee Fogarty, 43, and Glenn Matthews 26.

Joy Ghoseroy was the main wicket taker with three. Marsa won the game and now have a two-game advantage over Washington. The score before Sunday’s match was three-all.

Meanwhile, the final Division Two game of the Summer League, between Betfair and Gozo, will be played on Saturday. Betfair will be champions with a win but a loss could see the title go to Mellieħa.
