The Żebbuġ deputy mayor found guilty of stealing a palmtop computer during a swearing-in ceremony for councillors last year has resigned from the Labour Party.

The Sunday Times has reported that Domenic Cutajar was still serving on the council despite having a theft conviction. The PL said it was unaware of the case and promised to deal with the matter.

Asked what action was taken against the deputy mayor, a party spokesman said Mr Cutajar “handed his resignation from the Labour Party on Monday”.

Mr Cutajar is still an independent councillor. The case goes back two years to March 28 when Mr Cutajar stole the palmtop while he, along with other newly-elected councillors, were being sworn in during a ceremony at Auberge de Castille, in Valletta where the Prime Minister’s Office is located.

In court, the councillor admitted to the theft and returned the computer to its owner. He received a conditional discharge last year.
