Maltese girl selected for Top Model UK 2011
Maltese model, Sofia Mifsud has been shortlisted among the final 200 applicants to take part in next year’s Top Model UK, a competitor show to Britain's Next Top Model.
Carina Camilleri, director of models.com.mt, and local agent of Britain's Next Top Model winner Tiffany Pisani, confirmed that Ms Mifsud was chosen for Top Model UK (and not BNTM, as reported) from thousands of applicants to reach the final selection.
Ms Camilleri, who scouted Tiffany five years ago as she was walking out of the dentist’s, said that she was inundated with requests for representation by Tiffany.
“I got hundreds of emails requesting Tiffany to head their campaign in Malta and even here in the UK”.
She confirmed that Models.com.mt will still be the subsidiary agents for Tiffany in Malta, “Obviously Models 1 will be the mother agency.”
She said she had the opportunity to speak to show host, supermodel Elle Macpherson at length after the BNTM final.
“Elle was very delighted with the result and said that Tiffany won the contest because she’s an all rounder and offered the whole package.”

As a Maltese Citizen and an Australian permanent resident I am shocked at what I'm reading. Congratulating and being proud of Maltese doing well abroad is a good thing and morally supporting. Why shouldn't we be proud that we do well in beauty contests, the eurovision or anything else for that matter. The last I heard, the Australians have been raving about the medals won over the past days at the CW Games. Should we say Australians are insular? The broader question is why are there some Maltese and quite a few Australians (particularly of Maltese descent) who still cannot live in a society which embrases everyone and therefore a different way of doing things?
As for who thinks that Australians llive a boring life, i'm sorry...I don't agree AT ALL. I have been hear for almost 3 years and I love this country. While Australia is not for all I don't appreacite calling a beautiful country such as Australia with opportunities around every corner and beautiful people an unpleasant place to live in. Wherever you choose to live is what you make it.....not what it is!

Evidently, people don't know how to dream anymore. It's bad enough that you limit yourselves, but that you have to voice discontent and shout 'facts of life' (based on nothing but anecdotal 'evidence' and conjecture) about people you've never met. It disgusts me. Seriously, no joke--disgusts. The problem with people nowadays is that they think dreams are useless, that dreams are unreachable, that dreams are the stuff of children. They might be right on that last one though, but I must say, the kids got it right. Children innately know what they want; not to get a degree or see the world or be famous-- they don't know what that means. When you ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, what you get is them telling you that they basically want to be *happy*. Alas, some people lost that burning heart, that pursuit, and have become bitter and lash out at people who have the brass to do what they want.

Good morning to All,
First of all I would like to congratulate Tiffany and a wish all the luck to Sofia. I am not in the fashion and glamour industry, but from my little knowledge their fame and fortune comes with a lot of sacrifices - just google it !
Secondly, what worries me is the new generation or 14/15/16 year olds who are lured in the fashion industry by some semi-professional agencies that we have in Malta. Miss "that" .. miss "this" .. unfortunately it's a money making business with no real results .. apart from netting some easy €s from these kids and their parents. Also, the "modelling profiles" found on some the popular social network (vide Hi5 and FB) leaves little to the immagination.
Please parents - take note of the risks for your children .. beofre it's too late. Maybe Tiffany and her agency can make a news conference and inform the public of the perils !

Reading the comments below, I am disgusted by certain close-minded opinions. There is nothing wrong with finding a job as a model. Or perhaps the opinions are just frustrated manifestations of sour grapes. When will we grow up and support one another instead of playing down the success of fellow Maltese citizens?

Jealousy ! I would like to know what profession or work the people that are commenting negatively do. Meeting so many people and travelling aroung should be fun. But it is not all fun. Top models work hard as any other person attains such fame. Lets enjoy it and well done Tiffany!

Margie.Fabri.Wilcox Sydney - ooooo big words - i'm sure your were you come from you win contests/trophies/cups on a daily basis. However being a small country we do like to cheer and be happy when something positive comes our way. So rather then calling us stupid or silly for backing and being happy for tiffany and Sofia - why dont you just keep your comments to yourself - Girls - Well done

Maltese girl selected as top Model... Biggggggggg Deal. why is little Malta so small minded, i think the Maltese must lead a very sheltered life, is this really very important, i am sure its not going to make any difference to the tourist industry, we & most still love Malta regardless of your silly eurovison contest and unimportant news such as the above article , besides she is a model in the UK and not in Malta, so whats the big deal then? this must sound as if anybody else in Malta from a female point of view is not worhty of such appraisals. Wrong the majority of the Maltese female gender are as beautiful as any foreign competitor. So there you go.

What a downer you are. instead of wishing well to someone who did something with her own talent , you are trying to put her down.
well it show's how much you love Malta and the Maltese!!
Good luck Tiffany and wish you more than you have achieved .
All Malta is proud of you apart from those that are very jealous .

"Why is little Malta so small minded?"
Well, what do you call yourself then?? The only thing that happened here is that Times of Malta shared the success of a model in another country with the public. What's wrong with that? Is it not justified and are they hurting someone?
Also... so you are saying that if you are doing something which does not improve or help in the tourist industry you won't do it at all. Well that's funny! So ALL people, and I mean ALL, should get rid of their hobbies & their passion including what they simply love to do & what makes them live for it just because it's not helping the tourist industry? So pathetic!! Give yourself a pat on the back for making my day!!!! Your comment was sad but hilarious!!

And how dare you speak of how we should live our lives in Malta. You have no right to tell ANYONE how one should live. Not even a local in your own country. More especially to foreigners!!
Unimportant news? Do you think that news should only include tragic events. Success is not important? You're unbelievable!!

Everything is wrong with that, how deluded are you? Hard work, humility and loving others - that's what life is all about. Not standing half naked in a room full of strangers while they create airbrushed images of you that are primarily marketed at gay men, an increasingly insecure (and materialistic) generation of girls/women and perverts of all stripes who wouldn't understand the sacredness of our human bodies if it whacked them in the ear.

Why all these negative comments? Maybe it's jealousy? I admire people who take opportunities that are available to make their dreams come true. U mhux ha jsiru sinjuri mix-xejn! To be a Top Model is a lot of work. You don't just have to look pretty with no effort at all

May they seek and grab every opportunity presented to them, I can sincerely only wish them luck! Especially as in such cases where they happen to dual citizenship status which qualifies them to do so, they do well... It obviously helps in opening a massive amount of opportunities no full-blooded Maltese can dream of, but why be jealous? That is how the world goes folks!

No, K. Crockford. Let's not give the impression that the future of all Maltese girls lies in modelling as we'll be bringing up a generation of deluded youngsters. Just like we shouldn't give boys the impression that they'll all become international football stars.
Some people have what it takes, others don't. By all means we should be proud of those who have the talent and persevere, but I think we're now getting an overdose of this BNTM stuff (like we have been getting for years re. Eurovision Song Contest).
Let's choose the country's role models/ambassadors carefully.
Only last week I was involved in a public consultation meeting on how we need to inspire kids/youths to take up science subjects. We have a disproportionate number (compared to our population) of great scientists/inventors/researchers who have done a name for themselves and for Malta. Are they promoted as role models? NO. Does anybody know who they are or anything about their work? Hardly.
I wish the best of luck to our models but let's not bring up a generation of misguided and deluded youths.
K. Crockford
Oct 6th 2010, 12:34
Marco Cremona, i do agree with you on some points though not on all,
as far as i know apart from tiffinay, sofia is the only other model that has/will be taking part, so i fail to see how this is an overdose and considering Malta has a 100% success rate in winning BNTM unlike the eurovision contest were malta has never won it (and prob never will)
Let's choose the country's role models/ambassadors carefully.
I see, so if i a person decides to become a model competes and wins abroad or a footballer artist, etc etc and is very successful, we should not support them since they haven’t achieved any academic breakthroughs?
Let's not give the impression that the future of all Maltese girls lies in modelling as we'll be bringing up a generation of deluded youngsters. Just like we shouldn't give boys the impression that they'll all become international football stars.
I doubt all women think their going to be supermodels or all men are going to be the next pele just cause someone does well internationally

@ K.Crockford,
I fully agree with M. Cremona. You will be surprised how many young girls already believe they are models when its clear many of them do not have what it takes to be models let alone top models.
I worry mostly about all these local "agents", contest organisers etc who in order to make a quick buck lead young girls & boys to think they can be models. Tiffany was a one-off, she had something special and made the most out of her situation and that's what got her success. Whilst being happy for her great achievement let's be realistic and recognise that we are not going to become a country that will be churning out models by the dozen.

K. Crockford
I re-iterate, I wish the Maltese model(s) the best of luck but we (and not only us Maltese) have a tendency to sensationalise glamorous activities and idolise models, singers, actors (and politicians) but fail to give due appreciation to the equally important feats by Maltese in other professions - which, in my opinion, would be better role models for kids.
This, I think, was Joanne Fenech's argument which you interpreted as sour grapes.
S.Micallef
Oct 6th 2010, 13:19
Well said, whilst being happy for Tiffany, let's concentrate on young people making something out of themselves. Let's move away from this idea that has plagued Malta in the past years - everyone seems to be a singer, model or actor - very few people make it abroad and Malta is no different.
The sad thing is that these deluded youngsters as you call them have little time to think of anything else and even less time to think of a back up plan to some silly dream they have.
J Simpson
Oct 6th 2010, 16:00
Oh come one people....young girls dream all the time.....I used to dream of marrying a prince..becoming a singer....becoming an actress and walk the red carpet...etc etc. Let the girls dream for heaven's sake...nothing is wrong with that!
S.Micallef
Oct 6th 2010, 16:18
Dreaming is fine but not at the cost of being unrealistic. What's worrying is the amount of parents and people willing to make a buck pushing kids & fuelling their dreams which will never materialise.
Beauty contests/ modelling/ acting glamorous are no longer just hobbies for many, they have now become a "career" choice. Some girls have what it takes to make it, but as is the case abroad, these are few. One simply needs to go through beauty contest participants - many are very plain-looking, singers - many can't sing, actors - many can't act. So i think a large number of these wannabe models, beauty contest participants, actors and singers should really wake up, stop watching E! and get back to the real world.
How many maltese girls winning BNTM will there be? How many Joseph Callejas will there be? A few. I suggest that we all keep that in mind. Tiffany winning does not automatically up all Maltese wannabe models to Top model status.

Dear Cassandra Miggiani, modelling doesn't mean porn!! The fashion industry is one of the most if not the most industry that makes money. Fortunately enough for those fortunate ones who make it to work in this industry make a lot of money! I don't see what is wrong with that!

@ Cassandra Miggiani
I was referring to "sinjur u famuz mix-xejn", not to standing half naked etc as you put it. If you can make a lot of money and become famous, etc, why not? You make money because people pay you for something in return, and when a large number of people benefit from your product or service, then the money paid is substantial. What's wrong with that?
Modelling is just one way to reach many people and share a slice from the huge advertisement industry. People who complain and have funny "robin hood" ideas usually contribute little to society themselves.
