An 18-year-old from St Julians is in critical condition and four others, including a woman, were badly injured in a head-on collision in Mosta yesterday.

Football stickers, blood and fuel marked the area where a Maruti Omni van, driven by the 18-year-old man now battling for his life, collided with a Peugeot 306 driven by Carmela Fells, 57, of Msida along Bidnija Road, Mosta at about 4 p.m.

Riding as passengers in the van, heading towards Mosta, were brothers Dean and Sean Agius, 17 and 15, of Mosta and a 20-year-old man from Sliema.

The names of the van driver and the 20-year-old could not be confirmed at the time of writing.

The police, who did not give out any names, confirmed the van driver was in a critical condition and the other four had sustained serious injuries but were not critical.

Rescuers on the scene said the front passenger of the van had his feet trapped beneath the crumpled metal and had to be released with the assistance of Civil Protection Department personnel. The van’s occupants were reported to have been conscious though in a state of panic.

They were taken to hospital in two ambulances.
