Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara yesterday successfully defended his time-trial title at the UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Australia as Great Britain’s David Millar had to settle for silver.

Olympic champion Cancellara completed the 45.6-kilometre course in Geelong, near Melbourne, in 58 minutes and 9.19 seconds to claim world gold for a fourth time, finishing a commanding 1min 2.75secs ahead of Millar, who clocked 59:11.94.

Germany’s Tony Martin was third, with Australian duo Richie Porte and Michael Rogers in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cancellara, the champion in 2006, 2007 and 2009, was behind Millar at the first time check after 6.6km, but then took the lead, extending his advantage all the time.
