I have caried out some searches. The most quoted price of LPG is Saudi Aramco Contract Price (“Saudi” CP or just “CP”) which currently is, after recent hefty price reductions, around US$ 587 per metric tonne fob Saudi Arabia. This translates into a price of €4.28 for 10 Kg of LPG fob Saudi port. Can the MRA explain the difference between €4.28 and €12.00 for 10Kg cylinder deliverd to our door in Malta? A difference of €5.72? The costs and profits are more than the price itself, fob saudi port.
MRA please explain clearly were the costs and profits are? Are we being had?

Natural gas prices hit a 2010 low; Gasoline pump prices fall for 16th straight day
Topics:Commodities.Chris Kahn, AP Energy Writer, On Thursday August 26, 2010, 3:26 pm EDT
NEW YORK (AP) -- Natural gas prices on Thursday slumped to a record low for the year after the government reported a rise in U.S. supplies.
The contract for September delivery gave up 5.4 cents to settle at $3.817 per 1,000 cubic feet on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier in the day, it hit a 2010 low of $3.794.
The Malta Resources Authority needs to clarify what is happening in Malta, gas prices going up month after month when in other countries, gas prices are slumping.
M.R.A. PLEASE EXPLAIN. ARE WE SEEING A MONOPOLY IN ACTION IN MALTA, SUPPORTED BY THE AUTHORITY ITSELF?

@ Sean Grima. I went through all the posts, and it was the two comments of Sean Grima that caught my attention. One in English and one in Maltese. Too much fuss about a few cents, he writes.
If one looks at the "Similar Stories" one finds that at the end of each month there is a gradual increase, with the exception of one month when there was a reduction of 10cents. Clicking on those "Similar stories" brings even older stories.
Since APRIL 2009, the price of gas has gone up consistently. Now it is almost three times as much what it cost in March 2009. All this fuss about a few cents !!!
Privitisation is meant to created competition. In Malta it mean to create a private monopoly. Example : the bus service reform, which is even worse. From many owners to one single owner, and no competition, just a private monopoly. And now the public owned German train company will have this private monopoly in Malta. Lump it!

INCREASE ON THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET !!!!!!!!
Has a war broke out somewhere on the Globe ? Normally the price of fuel increases due to some INTERNATIONAL CRISIS ! Apparently , the price of GAS IS NOW MORE THAN DOUBLE LAST YEARS !!!!!!!!
These hefty increases , STINK and the UNIONS (dormant) must look into it ASAP , moreover when earlier to-day they declared that the weekly increase in the forthcoming Budget results in just Eu1.16 ! This is the lowest in many years , paltry compared to this years Eu5.82 (?????) Hsibt li kienet geljja l-Elezzjoni !
Then , I believe there has been a decrease of 1 CENT on the price of fuel oil . Oh, What a RELIEF .

Shaun Camilleri
Oct 1st 2010, 18:45
Every few months they keep putting the cost of gas up it seems. They do it slowly so that you forget by how much it really is going up. In a month or so they will increase the price up again. Of course politicians do not care as they give themselves their own pay rises which aren't fixed to anything. They get together and decide how much they deserve. Tax the poor and keep the rich happy - a system that has been in place since medieval times.

So you came to repeat your comment in Maltese because you thought people didn't understand your original comment in English? No, it's just because we ignored you the first time, but not the second. It's not just the gas but everything else that seems to be on the increase and the government knows about it but does not care. The same excuses keep trotting up "market liberilzation", "true market cost", "nothing in life is free (well it never was!" and so on. It's not just the water and electricity bills, but also food stuffs that keep increasing every other month. Go ask your mum how much her shopping costs...

Almost six years have passed and the reform was a weekly raise to themselves by this government. The only time a politician is to be believed is when he say it to the marines!

Can the opposition take this opportunity ( before it will be to late for them to find something to govern, when time comes),and show this government that privatize essential outlets like the gas, W/E, Banks ,Airport ect ect is risking of having another Greece, in the Mediterranean sea, because it is an exact photo copy of what had happened there is happening here. And may I ask, are all the Unions on a shut down, or closed down.

The real problem here is not the gas prices abroad and neither is it the need to invest. The real reason why we are paying through the nose goes a few months back when the gas bottling plant was sold to a private company. I firmly believe that monopolies KILL. Monopolies kill business, kill competition, kill innovation and kill the customer. And this was precisely why the PN govt. had liberlised the market. Yet, either through lack of foresight or maybe because they take the people for the apathetic idiots that they are, they failed to foresee (conveniently maybe?) that the chances of a new gas bottling plant in Malta are rather remote (at least in the coming decade). So what happened? A public monopoly with price controls became a Private monopoly with uncontrolled prices. So now its pretty useless crying over spilt milk. the Unions, GRTU, MHRA and all those who are about to issue a Press release expressing disappointment should have done something when the pudding was being baked. Issa halsu u la tasal l-elezzjoni morru ivvotawlu "ghax 35 sena ilu ...bla...bla....bla....!!"

I like your post, jacqueline brincat. So true, so typical of this immature population which allow their politicians to do as they like and give them unconditional love while they get beaten on the head. This government can forget my vote for sure, now and forever. And I hope there are more like me who can think with their own mind. And I hope we don't make the same mistakes with Joseph Muscat as we have done with the Nationalists for the past 20 years. Politicians are there to do a good job not to run up huge debts while privatizing all the country's assets and getting rich beyond belief in the process. Show us there is hope for this joke of a country.

Some one who was against monopoles. If you don't believe it go over news papers articles and read what a representative of a a certain firm used to write,
Once gas changes every month its price it is logical that wages change at the same rate. Ridiculous! Yes It is agreed.

So the Euro 1.16 is now BAH. It was already BAH as the amount ,which is said will be given ,was already very very low to cover the Drastic increases in the price of just to mention Bread, Gas, Electricity and water etc etc etc., AND if the Hon. Minister of Finance now tells us that this has been increased to maybe by an Euro or Two this also will not be enough. See my commect re Statistics under the Article of the Times about the Euro1.16 and you will find more info. @ Godwin Dalli - Malta like 2 other countries shows NO DATA. This maybe as we have no gas mains. Also cannot tell how the rates are worked out.Maybe someone from The Statistics Office will tell us what the amount for Malta works out in this table.Have tried but I must have done a mistake somewhere as ........... Yet there is no increase in pensions and wages. Where are the Unions? This government has shut the Unions mouth and put everybody with its back to the wall and standing on quick sand. We are sinking fast. We will soon start foraging and chop trees for cooking and heating.

What not another increase in the cost of LPG ????............................, but do not worry Mr & Mrs Joe Public as the proposed €1 16 cost of living increase will soon cover the increases in the cost of Gas and Bread which at the end of the day these are luxuries in our lifestyle!

There's probably 'no data' for Malta, because there's no gas supply in the 'mains'.
Households generally only but LPG cylinders in Malta.

I would be very grateful if somebody can explain to me what is shown on this link:

Are we being ripped off? What about the Malta Resources Authority?

The site you quote gives mains gas (natural gas expressed in kwh of energy) but also that of LPG (malta not included) prices with and without taxes and duties, The malta LPG price is now at around €1.20 per kg. The list given is prices of LPG per litre. 1kg = 2 liters, Malta price for comparison = €0.60 about 9th cheapest or 10th dearest !!

If we take that site, the highest LPG per liter cost is United Kingdom at € 0.75 per litre. However there is no value for Malta on the site......we can email it to them as we are the HIGHEST BY FAR AT A STAGGERING € 1.18 PER LITRE!!!!!!!!!!
A Bezzina
Oct 1st 2010, 19:44
Jason, though the way the LPG prices are fluctuating leave me with some suspision, the price of €1.18 you quote is for a kg not a litre. The specific gravity of LPG is 0.5. That means that 1 kg = two liters or in the UK it would cost €1.50 per kg (€0.75 per lt) and for Malta €0.59 per lt.

"Thank you Mr. Government, just in time for the increased usage of gas during the coming winter months"...or lo and behold, maybe prices will go down to what they were before privatization!
And this is the legislation that has the people so dear at heart.
I am not so confident now, that bus fares will not follow the same route. Oh yes we have been promised that fares will not be increased. "You know what, I don't believe government propaganda any more!" This will be my motto when it's time to choose who will represent us, both at a local and national level.

But... until this happens.... im worrying. Seriously.

Currently on XFM there's a small clip, with words similar to that said after the an equity advertiement where by law they say 'il-prezz jista joghla, kif ukoll jinzel'
However this clip goes like this "Ibza ghall-gass", then in an undertone "il-prezz jista joghla imma QATT ma jinzel".
They hit the nail on the head!!
