Between August 2005 and the end of June 2010 there was a total of 6,127 vehicles which were tested under the Emissions Alert Scheme. Forty-four of them belonged to government departments, but did not include vehicles rented by the government.

Answering a parliamentary question by opposition MP Anġlu Farrugia, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said that during the same period there had been 6,741 vehicles summoned for testing but not presented.

Each of them had had its road licence reissue restricted until it was tested and passed the test.

Dr Gatt added that also between 2005 and June 2010, 12,060 vehicles had been tested for emissions in roadside checks, with 6,479 failing the test.
