A section of the façade of the President's Palace in Valletta at the corner of Archbishop Street overlooking St George's Square, has been uncovered after months of restoration work.

The work was carried out by the Restoration Unit of the Resources Ministry as part of a project which started in 2009 and will take four years to complete.

The restoration work includes the replacement of areas of cracked and disintegrating stonework, the repair of the highly sculptured gypsum corbels underlying the timber balcony, structural strengthening of the balcony, repairs to the balcony itself and cleaning and pointing works.

The balcony had been found to be infested with dry and wet rot.

All four facades of the palace will be restored. The project is being supervised by senior architects Mireille Fsadni and Jean Frendo.
