An EU fact sheet shows among the countries with the highest levels of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions per person according to the gross domestic product for 2008, the Labour Party’s spokesman for the Environment, Leo Brincat said.

He said that unless Malta immediately adopted measures to curb such emissions, it was clear it would find it difficult to keep to the EU imposed limits in future.

Whatever the penalties the country would have to pay unless radical and preventive measures were taken, the fact remained that the country was already very late in addressing the problem, moreover when it resulted that 74 per cent of emissions were coming out of the power station and the remaining 26 per cent from land transport.
