Logos Hope, the floating bookstore, was opened to the public today. The fist visitor was President George Abela.

The ship, currently berthed at the Grand Harbour, is the fourth of the organisation’s ships which have been in use for the past 39 years. It was built in 1973 and was previously used as a car ferry, before it was transformed in 2008 to what it is today.

Media Relations Officer Jessie Laplue said the organisation has a special connection with Malta, as two of the four ships were registered here.

Logos is not only a bookstore, Ms Lapule pointed out. Run by volunteers, the non-profit organisation travels the world to deliver knowledge, help and hope to the countries it visits.

“The book fair is important especially in developing countries where access to literature may be difficult,” she said. However, the crew also deliver a community service in every port. In Africa, for example, the team worked in construction projects and eye clinics.

During its stay, the ship will be offering movie showings, fun fairs and culture events, amongst many others and will be in Malta until October 17.
