On September 25, The Times announced the death of Eddie Fisher and also regaled us with the news of his many divorces. His first marriage to Debbie Reynolds lasted for four years when he married Elizabeth Taylor. The same year he divorced Taylor he married Debbie Reynolds whom he divorced after five years. Then he married Connie Stevens and divorced her after two years, Terry Richards whom he divorced after seven months and at 75 he married Lin Betty.

Another exemplar of faithfulness and a model of the perfect marriage is Elizabeth Taylor herself. Within the span of 50 years, she had seven husbands and ultimately had eight divorces in total.

Her first marriage only lasted a short year. Dennis Hopper divorced his fifth wife on his deathbed... The list is endless.

How’s that for the seriousness of divorce? Mr Justice Joseph Morschauser of the New York State Supreme Court, who presided at the Stillman case and other divorce suits, advocated the abolition of divorce in the United States. “Divorce,” he said, “is a cancer in the vitals of American life... From my experience on the bench I know that halfway reforms are ineffective. The only way to cure the evils of divorce is to completely abolish divorce.” And we in Malta are clamouring to introduce it in our country!
