During the past few days, residents of Paola, especially those in Paola Square and connecting streets, had to suffer a lot of inconvenience caused by an invasion of cars trying to bypass the main road from St Anthony’s Church leading to the Addolorata Cemetery, which was taking them 20 minutes to pass through.
Traffic had to crawl at a snail’s pace and was at a standstill many times.
What was the reason behind all this confusion? There were a couple of workmen carrying out work on the pavement in Sir Boffa Avenue and they turned the two-way lane towards Valletta into one, causing the traffic to slow down.
When are we to learn from the experience of other countries that work on our roads, especially main ones, should be carried out during silent hours?
When are we to learn that our refuse collection should again be carried out during silent hours and not during peak hours causing serious traffic congestion? Here three main arteries come to my mind which take a lot of time for commuters to pass through: Żabbar Road, Paola; Independence Street, Mosta and St Joseph High Road, Ħamrun. It is true that there are too many cars on our roads but it is also true that we are doing nothing to control the situation. The shifting of roadworks and other services which hinder the flow of traffic to silent hours goes a long way to improving the situation.
