I refer to the press release by Luxol Basketball Club (September 22) in which it was stated that Luxol are the “oldest” club on the island. This is far from the truth as Luxol participated in the Malta Basketball Association competitions during the second season, that is 1965.

The honour of being the oldest club in Malta falls on Athleta (Juvenis) Basketball Club of Sliema who were pioneer members of the Malta Basketball Association from their beginning in season 1964. In fact, Luxol Basketball are a breakaway of players from Athleta and John Tabone, Luxol present coach and ex-player, started his career playing for Athleta in that 1964 season.

Furthermore, Athleta were also the first to organise basketball friendlies in Malta even before the Malta Basketball Association was founded and that was way back in 1962, thanks to their then section captain Anthony Falzon.
