I ran my own small business for over 20 years; they were the times when money was no problem and we did well. However, when the surcharge hit us at 64 per cent, we had to make a choice. Was it still worth running or not, when one considers that our normal electricity bill was in the region of €18,400 a year? We are now faced with €29,900 a year.

Luckily, we made the right choice and sold off.

Today, I do not regret it one moment. Why? How does anyone expect businesses to run when the costing on electricity alone has jumped over 100 per cent? The same goes for the tourist industry, as stated in The Times. It is not competition that is killing Malta, it’s the utility bills.

Also, I do not know why commercial rates for electricity are higher than household rates. Does anyone mean to tell me it costs more to supply a shop than a house?

The fact is most shops are incurring losses just to keep their freezers running, so why are they paying more for the same product?

Furthermore, it is no use bringing more tourists to Malta when the hotels are still burdened with extreme costs. Tackling the extreme cost of the utility bills is the only way to bring Malta forward and help the tourist industry. On the other hand, we could raise prices. However, that would mean we would no longer be competitive.

Cutting down on everyone’s costs will bring more cash in hand and generate wealth. And also jobs. What is the matter with everyone? It’s so simple and, yet, no one does anything? Why?
