I agree fully with Norman Grech (September 21). The George Cross has no place on any symbols of Maltese pride such as our flag or army property. Where is the pride in displaying an emblem given patronisingly, from a time when our island was servile?

Respect it as a chapter in our history, by all means, but displaying it publicly demeans all the work involved to gain independence.

Do other countries (France, Germany, etc) have symbolsof past servility on their flags?No!

Furthermore, the eight-pointed cross is on a par with the George Cross: An outdated reminder of a time when the Maltese were second-class citizens, mistakenly displayed as a badge of pride.
