Having read the report Transport Watchdog Chided For ‘Failing’ Commuters Over Drivers Who Smoke (September 18), I declare that I make very frequent use of public transport and I hardly ever take a bus on which the driver is not smoking. Sometimes he lights up before the bus departs.

I have often overheard tourists commenting on this fragrant contravention: “There are stickers with ‘No Smoking’ everywhere and drivers smoke to their hearts’ content apparently without being punished!” The same holds true for some of the staff on the Sliema-Valletta ferry service.

What are the authorities waiting for before taking some drastic action against this almost universal abuse? It would be too late to wait for the transport reform to kick off.
