As I was born and bred at Qormi and spent a considerable number of years working in one of the Qormi bakeries, each year I make it a point to visit the Qormi bread festival.
Unfortunately, the focus of the festival this year was not on bread or bread-making but on entertainment and food. Everywhere you looked there were people queuing up to gorge on an assortment of food, or watching some form of entertainment. The main attraction of the festival was the Zoo Productions doing their thing.
What I, and I am sure many other locals and especially tourists wanted to see and hear, was a live presentation on how bread is made in the traditional Qormi way. In such a festival the focus should be solely on the traditional art of bread-making and nothing else.
At least my evening did not end so badly as I ate a very good pizza and was pleasantly surprised at the promising talent of a young kid dressed in red doing an impersonation of Elvis.
One other word of advice to the organisers: Please make sure next time that there are enough garbage bins to cope with the huge amounts of rubbish and empty bottles that such an activity generates.
