Israeli police entered the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem today after a deadly shooting sparked riots in the Arab east of the city.

"Following stone-throwing, police entered the compound," the police said in a statement, adding that they did not use "riot dispersal means," which usually refers to rubber bullets and tear gas.

Clashes had erupted in annexed east Jerusalem earlier after a Palestinian was shot dead by an Israeli settlement guard in Silwan, a tense neighbourhood outside the walls of the compound, which is sacred to both Jews and Muslims.
