Though still a normal school day for the 26 Maltese students aged 5-18 attending the European School in Brussels, Malta’s Independence Day was celebrated for the first time yesterday.

After giving a resounding welcome to Pierre Clive Agius, Malta’s Ambassador to Belgium, the Maltese group sang Freddie Portelli’s Viva Malta and a young girl read out poems from Dun Karm’s repertoire.

After receiving individual presents from the ambassador, the students and their parents indulged in some Maltese food, including a pudina (pudding) prepared by the two Maltese language teachers in Brussels, Charmaine Munro and Sue Privitelli.

The European School in Brussels caters for the education of children whose parents work for the EU Institutions.
