More than 800 anglers yesterday cast their lines in Marsascala bay to break the Guinness World Record in aid of a cancer charity.

Participants were asked to contribute €5 to the Puttinu Cares for Children Fund, which helps children battling cancer.

They were then awarded a certificate to mark their involvement in breaking the world record, which had been held by Sweden for the past 11 years, after 679 anglers took part in a similar event.

The fish, most of which were small in size, were weighed and returned to the sea. Speaking shortly after giving the starting signal to the event, President George Abela said this record meant more than others because it bore witness to the generosity of the people.

Since the marathon was supported by the Marsascala local council, Dr Abela urged others to follow suit with similar activities.
