It was a bad day to be a fish in Marsascala bay today.

Hundreds of anglers lined the bay and successfully established a new Guinness world record of the number of anglers fishing together for up to four hours.

The activity was organised by Blue Sea Sport Angling Club and Marsascala council in aid of Puttinu Cares - which cares for young cancer patients.

Over 800 anglers lined the bay for the event, with the starting signal being made by President George Abela, who cast the first line.

The old record was established by Sweden, with 679 participants took part in a similar event 11 years ago. Participants in today's event each donated €5 for the charity.

President Abela congratulated the organisers, saying that rather than the world record, the event was important because it was yet another expression of the people's generosity.

The fish that were caught were weighed and then thrown back into the sea.
