That aircraft isn't leaving at all. It's at crusing altitude above Malta and simply flying over the islands.There's no way an aircraft leaving Luqa would achieve that altitude anywhere near Malta.

That means: The aircraft is heading away from the bright moon ... It does not say at the aircraft is taking off!

I think C. Cassar mistook "leaves the bright moon" with "leaves the bright islands of Malta", plausible when considering the state of the roads. Oh the humour!
