With reference to Roamer’s Column (The Sunday Times, September 12), St Augustine did not bring Christianity to the shores of Britain in the sixth century. Christianity had reached Britain by the third century and Augustine was met on the shores of Britain by the Christian Princess of Kent. There are many Celtic saints which pre-date Augustine.
I suggest that to find out more about this period of British history Roamer should reads the work of the historian, the Venerable Bede.
I hope that Pope Benedict’s visit to Britain this year proceeds as peacefully as did Pope John Paul II’s visit to Britain in 1982. The bloody days of the Reformation belong in the 16th, not the 21st century!
