A 79-year-old jeweller was injured this morning in a failed hold-up at Frank Zampa Jewellery in Sta Lucia Street in Valletta.

The case happened at about 8 a.m. and involved three men.

People on the scene said that two men, one of them armed, entered the shop, which was only partly open, and demanded cash.

The jeweller resisted and a shot was fired, hitting no one. The jeweler suffered a blow to his face but still managed to grab the assailant's weapon.

The would-be robbers then escaped down towards Victoria Gate, where a getaway car was waiting.

The police are investigating and are understood to have requested footage from CCTV cameras around the area.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani is holding an inquiry. The jeweller, who is from Valletta, received hospital treatment.
