The Resources Ministry this afternoon condemned vandalism which damaged stonework under one of the arches of the recently-restored Victoria Gate.

It said somebody had started a fire under one of the arches.

Such actions, it added, demonstrated irresponsibility and a lack of appreciation of Malta's heritage.

Repair work has already started.

The ministry said it would continue its programme of restoration works, including the upgrading of the Liesse area of Valletta where Victoria Gate is located.

Some €400,000 have already been spent on the project.
