A call for tenders for the construction of four new buildings at SmartCity Malta has been issued, marking the start of a new phase for the project, the company said yesterday.

The buildings, two to house offices and two for retail outlets, will form part of the project’s so-called lagoon district.

SmartCity Malta CEO Far-eed Abdulrahman said Smart-City had already started work-ing on the new phase because of the interest generated in the first building, scheduled to be launched on October 10.

“With the kind of interest we have seen so far, SmartCity Malta’s lagoon retail district promises to be one of the most happening places in Malta,” he said.

The mammoth project to create a state-of-the-art information technology hub, which was inaugurated in 2007 and is expected to cost at least €275 million, is planned to cover a 360,000 square metre site in Ricasoli by the 2021 completion date.
