Pavements in Buġibba, Qawra and St Paul’s Bay are not provided for in the local council’s budget, it seems. Most have been neglected since they were first paved and never given any maintenance; except for the ones in St Paul Street – in part of this street they have been re-done twice, if not three times.

What about construction sites? These pavements are broken up by contractors and are never restored, even after the construction work is over. Cases in point are Triq San Aristarku and Triq il-Konverżjoni, and part of Triq il-Villeġġjatura, which has never been paved; it is still with cement covering.

I have given up reporting mishaps to the council, as in nine times out of 10, no action is taken, either because there are no funds or because a couldn’t-care-less attitude prevails; we just have to live with it. When are we going to ever learn?
