Żejtun local council has commissioned the first set of LED street lamps on the island, according to mayor Joe Attard.

The street lights were proposed for Misraħ Brejġu, which is being embellished.

The project was approved in May 2009 by the Department of Local Government that provided financial assistance.

The 26W LED lights consume a third of a 70W street lamps now in use. The cost of LED lights is about three times that of normal street lamps but this is offset by the energy saved and an almost zero maintenance cost. It is estimated that a minimum of 10 LED lamps will reduce C02 emissions by 1,000 kg annually.
