Three jailed for six months over false travel documents
Three Nigerian men who tried to leave the island using false Spanish residency cards and passports were yesterday each jailed for six months.
Greg Agharia, 18, Sunday Igbinakhase, 26, and Osas Aigi, 19, were caught at the airport on Thursday morning trying to board a flight to Rome. They pleaded guilty before Magistrate Edwina Grima to being in possession of and trying to use the counterfeit documents.
Legal aid lawyer Adrian Camilleri asked the court to take into consideration the fact that they had clean police records and had cooperated with the police.
Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi said in his opinion punishment should be somewhere near the minimum prescribed by law, acknowledging that they had, in fact, cooperated during investigations.

How many hundreds of Nigerian illegal immigrants do we have in Malta? They obviously do not want to stay here. They just want to use Malta as a stepping stone for somewhere better in Europe. But the countries where they want to go do not want them. So the Nigerians try to leave Malta illegally in the hope of entering some other country - illegally too. This is going beyond a joke.
The police who bring these Nigerians to court know where to find them - they can start with Bugibba, then go to Marsa, Birzebbuga etc. They can easily find enough Nigerians to fill a charter flight. Nigeria is a very big country which exports oil and many other raw materials. Nigeria is riddled with corruption, but that is not a reason why the Maltese should be burdened with Nigerians, getting into trouble, breaking our laws and getting free board and lodging in prison at our expense.
