I agree perfectly with naturalist Arnold Sciberras that the Selmunett wall lizard is now extinct and that it was eradicated by rats.

The lizards are by nature sluggish in the morning as they still have to take up energy from the sun to move around and so during this time they are very vulnerable.

Up to 2007, rats probably feasted on the last specimen, which were on St Paul’s island. I myself visited the island in 1970 and could not see a single specimen of the reptile. It’s really a great pity that the world has lost this beautiful reptile.
