England drew Romania in the play-offs for the UEFA U-21 Championships in Denmark, yesterday.

Stuart Pearce’s side, who finished second in Group 9 and qualified as one of the best-placed runners up, will take on the winners of Group 1 for a place in next summer’s finals.

Scotland, who topped Group 10, will play Group 5 runners-up Iceland, the latter aiming to qualify for the first time to the finals.

England and Scotland could have ended up playing each other and are likely to be delighted with the outcome after also avoiding the big names of European football.

Next month’s play-offs will determine the seven teams to join hosts Denmark at next year’s finals, which are being held between June 11 and 25.

Five-times champions Italy were yesterday paired with Belarus and the Netherlands take on Ukraine who they beat in the 2006 final.

The Draw
England vs Romania; Holland vs Ukraine; Spain vs Croatia; Switzerland vs Sweden; Iceland vs Scotland; Czech Republic vs Greece; Italy vs Belarus.

Note: All ties will take place over two legs between October 8 and 12.
