Nigerians jailed for using forged travel documents
Three Nigerian men aged between 19 and 26 years were today each jailed for six months after they tried to leave the country for Rome yesterday.
They were arrested at the airport and found to be in possession of false passports and Spanish ID cards.
Airport immigration officials spotted the false documents and called the police.
The migrants pleaded guilty.
Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi that he thought that their case warranted a jail term towards the minimum allowed by law as the accused had cooperated with the police.

the people who are advocating deportation should look up the criminal code and realise that deportation is not one of the punishments contemplated by law for this offence.

People must be getting fed up with making the same comment every time this sort of incident occurs. We all know that if these Nigerians don't want to be in Malta, then we should help them to leave, not put them in prison at the expense of the people. But does anyone of any influence ever read these comments and give a reasonable answer. I Think NOT !

These Nigerians should be treated like all the rest of non EU citizens. They broke the law, so they should be jailed and later deported to their country of origin.
We must remember that just because they are Africans they have no better rights than other people of a different colour.

The Group Save Malta From Illegal Immigration applauds this sentence, although we would like to see harsher sentences as history shows six months don't keep these illegals at check.

Why weren't they deported? Like this my hard earn money contributed towards taxes goes to these persons rather than those people who actually are in more need!

These stories are becoming all too frequent. It is obvious that Nigerians in Malta are either staying illegally or in any case intending to escape to mainland Europe. It's hard to believe that the police, which has proved so efficient against youngsters indulging in skinny dipping, cannot round up a few hundred Nigerians and hire a charter flight to repatriate them back to their home country. Nigeria is vast. It's an oil exporting nation. It has infinite mineral resources.

I am a Nigerian. While I do understand that some ppl have various pressing reasons, I agree wt Vella. Nigeria even wit the internal problems we've got today is still far better off than many countries to which its citizens flock to. Pathetic! Imagine a Nigerian going to leave in Mali, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, among many others. But they do.
Reason: Our ppl took on a mentality acquired during the military era that a successfl Nigerian is one who lives outside its shores. The few that succeeded illegally abroad wld come home then to flaunt their little wealth. The stealing military govt didnt help either. It was grab as U can.
It s there4 ironical that 11 yrs after this era, our ppl have not still dropped the vagabondist idea, prefering to suffer abroad than to reign in their abundantly blessed fatherland. Salaries are up, the population is extremely good and responding to business, such that anything one does is bound to garner market share, and thus, profit. Thousands of Lebanese, Indians and the British move over to Nigeria as it is developing into a frontier market.
Malta shld increase the sentence as an encouragement!

There must be a thriving business on the island for forged ID cards and passports, that these Africans seem to be able to get.
Oh well as the monopoly game says Do not pass go, go straight to jail.

There's no "thriving business on the island for forged ID cards and passports". Once one of them is in Rome he sends his passport via DHL to a colleague/relative here who then uses it himself (sometimes even without the need to change the photo if they somewhat resemble each other)!

Sending them to jail would mean that the Maltese people will have to pay for their stay.
They should be sent back to Nigeria instead.
