The planning authority yesterday gave the green light for the development of a two-storey car park for nearly 230 cars on the site of the Ninu Cremona school in Victoria.

The development on the site in Europe Street, close to the Arcadia shopping complex, will see the demolition of a building, the construction of the public car park, the building of sports grounds and an internal access road.

The car park will be located at basement level and the ground above the facility will eventually be surfaced with turf to retain its original use for open-air sports activities ancillary to the school operations.

The proposed development is aimed at improving the parking provision for the existing school building and sports complex by increasing the number of parking spaces at basement levels.

The permit covers the demolition of an existing building and the construction of 226 parking spaces and access to the private road within the site area to be used for the dropping off and pick-up of schoolchildren, alleviating the congestion problem at the arterial road during peak school hours.

The site has an area of about 7,400 square metres and is presently being used as an informal car park.
