Man placed under probation for defiling 11-year-old
An 18-year-old man has been placed under probation and ordered to attend psychological sessions after a court found him guilty of groping his 11-year-old cousin last year.
The accused, who pleaded guilty, was 17 at the time.
The case happened in a field near Cottonera in January last year.
The court, which ordered a ban on publication of names, said the case had had psychological consequences on the girl, who was, however, not injured.

So we call poor 21-year-olds that hook up our power poles with their cars as "youngsters" and then call 18-year-old ********** "men"?
OK, men are to blame for lots of stuff...but hey, that's just too darn much.

Is there a sex offenders register in this country?

Without justifying either the crime (certainly not the crime) or the punishment, teenagers like the 17 year old in question, do not necessarily grow up to be sexual predators!
And let's face it, at 17 or even 18, you're not an adult, no matter what the law says! Can any adult claim to use the same judgement as an 17 year old? If so you have a major problem!
Ofcourse, this is no consolation for the victim!

Smoke a joint and you get your name published and probably end up in prison, abuse a kid and get put on probation. Weird country we live in. Which makes me wonder, what is the more serious crime in maltese criminal law? People that abuse kids should be thrown in jail and have the key thrown away!

And a man who smokes some cannabis gets around a year in jail. What a sick country we are living in.

Well said!
According to the Maltese, cultivation of one cannabis plant is considered trafficking and for that you get 6months to 4 years improsenment.
It seems that verdicts such as this continue to prove that for the local judiciary, growing a plant is worse than the defiling of minors.
So I join you in saying, what a sick country we are living in!

Amazing
Just under probation.

than that's why some hunters admitted to cutting down over a hundred trees at Mellieha.....
they must have been undertaking the noble deed of preparing the wooden sticks required for crucifixtion!

I don't think that is exactly the correct example to use but anyway

Probation is not nearly a punishment that fits the crime. The child will suffer from a psychological trauma for many years to come and the offender will strike again, harming other innocent children. Predators of children are not cured, they need to be monitored and ordered away from all children for the rest of their lives.
