I refer to Michael Scicluna’s St Paul’s Bay Council Deserves To Be Booked (September 2) and would like to add that the reasons why the area has pavements of a poor standard is that when the new pavements were laid some years ago, the workmanship done was very shoddy and substandard.

Not all the bases beneath the brick surface were made of concrete and most brickwork was not vibrated in situ, as such works demands. This was pointed out to the mayor at the time but, like most things that happened then, every suggestion made was steamrolled or ignored.

We are now paying the price for this shoddy workmanship: good pavements have a lifespan of 25 years or over but some only lasted eight years before the bricks began to sink and different levels started appearing on the pavements all over the district.
