I fully subscribe to Fr Kalċidon Vassallo’s plea that the restoration of our churches should be exempt from income tax (September 2).

I am convinced the authorities see sense in this idea as the government has given ample proof it holds the national heritage to heart, considering the large number of restoration projects that have been undertaken in the last few years.

Our churches are part of our islands’ patrimony as much as our fortifications, monuments, auberges and other historical buildings.

A further point I would like to make in this regard relates to the actual restoration process ofthe Balzan parish church stonework.

Now that this project seems to have been taken in earnest, I sincerely hope this brings with it the eventual dismantling of the mobile antennae from the church roof, or at least, their relocation to some other church property in the village, especially when restoration works reach the dome.

Otherwise, the restoration of our parish church, and the dome in particular, will be a travesty of what truly professional restoration is all about.
